How to Get to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye: Water Taxi vs. Flight

You've landed at Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE), and the turquoise water of Ambergris Caye is just 41 miles away. The only question left: boat or plane?

Both routes get you to San Pedro Town the same day, and both have their fans. The water taxi is the budget-friendly, scenic option. The Tropic Air puddle jumper is the fastest way to swap the arrivals hall for the beach. Here's how each works, which one suits your trip, and how the team at Diamanté Beachfront Suites can arrange either one for you, so your first island moment is a rum punch, not a ticket line.

Option 1: The water taxi

The water taxi is the less expensive way to reach the island, and the ride itself is part of the adventure. Boats leave from the water taxi terminal in Belize City, so you'll first need a taxi from the airport to the dock. From there, the crossing takes about 90 minutes, with a stop at Caye Caulker along the way.

The catch is the two queues: the taxi line at the airport and the ticket line at the terminal. Diamanté guests can skip both. Our preferred Belize driver, Mr. Mervin, meets you at the airport in a safe, comfortable vehicle with your ferry tickets already in hand. When you dock in San Pedro, a taxi is waiting to bring you straight to the hotel. Just book this service at least one week before you arrive.

ption 2: The Tropic Air puddle jumper

If time matters more than budget, fly. Tropic Air flights depart throughout the day, and the hop to San Pedro takes only 15 minutes. Once you clear the mainland, the water below turns every shade of blue and turquoise, a preview of what's waiting.

We can book your Tropic Air flights at no additional fee. Book through Diamanté and you pay at the Tropic Air desk when you arrive, and we handle any date or time changes free of charge.

How much time to leave between flights: we recommend at least 60 to 90 minutes between your international arrival and your puddle jumper. The airlines suggest 2 to 3 hours, so choose the buffer you're comfortable with. If you breeze through customs and immigration, Tropic Air will often put you on an earlier flight.

Which option is right for you?

There's no wrong answer, but your arrival time, budget and travel party usually make the choice for you.

Choose the water taxi if you're watching your budget, you love being on the water, or you'd like a glimpse of Caye Caulker before you settle in. It's also a relaxed way to start the trip if your international flight lands with plenty of daylight to spare. With Mr. Mervin handling the drive and the tickets, the only thing left to do is sit back and watch the coastline drift by.

Choose the flight if you're on a short getaway and every hour on the island counts, or if your international flight lands later in the day. It's also the easier option for families with young children: 15 minutes in the air is a lot simpler than a transfer plus a 90-minute crossing. And the views over the reef are a highlight in their own right.

Mixing it up is an option too. Some guests fly in to make the most of day one, then take the water taxi back to Belize City at the end of the trip, when there's no connection to rush for. Ask us about either leg when you book.

Start at the property. Take a dip in the infinity pool overlooking the sea, sink into the heated jacuzzi, or claim a spot under the oceanview pergola and watch the boats come and go. Every suite has a private terrace facing the water, so a sunset drink can happen without leaving your room.

Diamanté guests get an exclusive 5% discount at Elvi's Kitchen, Caramba, El Fogon, La San Pedrana and Gill E's Pour House, a good mix of classic Belizean cooking and laid-back island spots. Prefer a quiet night in? Grocery stores are a short walk away, and every suite comes with a full kitchen.

Booked direct? You also have exclusive access to Kathy's Sunset Cove, an easy place to end your first day with your feet up and the sky turning orange.

Planning the rest of your stay

With the travel behind you, the island opens up. San Pedro is the launch point for some of Belize's best marine experiences:

  • Hol Chan Marine Reserve for snorkeling and diving among vibrant coral and fish
  • Shark Ray Alley, where you can swim alongside nurse sharks and stingrays
  • Mexico Rocks, a protected area known for clear, calm water
  • The Split in Caye Caulker, a laid-back day trip by boat

Prefer dry land? Visit The Iguana Eco Corner, explore the ancient Maya site at the Marco Gonzalez Archaeological Reserve, or rent a golf cart for the day and head to Not-So-Secret Beach. For bigger adventures, you can fly over the Great Blue Hole, take the river trip to Lamanai, or head inland to Maya ruins like Xunantunich and Altun Ha. Tips for a smooth arrival
